Intermediaries

Intermediaries are essential links between the fish offer from fishermen and the fish demand from consumers. They buy the fish directly to the fishermen, fish auction markets, or groups of producers in order to sell it to wholesalers, processors, retail fishmongers, retailers or food service activities. Their responsibility is important, insofar as they are the first links in the chain after the fishermen. A sustainable economic relationship between fishermen and intermediaries is therefore essential for a Sustainable Development of the sector.

There are many forms of illegal fishing, including fishing without a license, misreporting of catches, fishing in closed areas or with illegal gear and taking undersized fish. The EFTEC research estimates the cost of these practices in selected fish groups across five Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs): €10 billion of lost catches by 2020; €8 billion of lost stock value in 2020; and 27,000 lost jobs in the fishing and processing industries.
