The European Commission will present minimum criteria for the ecolabelling of fishery products by year 2009's end.

July 9, 2009

Officers of the European Commission confirmed to the RFA at a private meeting on July 9, 2009 that a final text proposal of minimum criteria for the ecolabelling of fishery products will be presented to the European Council -EU Ministers of fishing- by year's end.

This document will conclude the work started in 2005 by the European Commission on the above subject and presented here: http://www.r-f-a.org/nc/en/action/projets/ue-eco-label.html

The RFA also took advantage of this meeting so as to introduce the project of the World Forum of Fish Harvesters and Fish Workers (WFF) to set up an international responsible fishing label for small-scale fisheries. This label will integrate the EU minimum criteria with regard to environmental aspects, but also socio-economics as recommended by the United Nations (FAO - Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries). Small-scale and coastal fisheries (artisanal fisheries) represent the essence of the French fleet. For several years already, it is estimated that ships of less than 12 m represent about 80% of the vessels. Year 2008 was hard for fleets as French auction markets dropped 10% in volume and 11% in value. But artisanal boats made better than others. Source: Philippe Urvois, Le Marin, 2009/04/03.
