RFA contribution at the meeting of the 'Pêche & Développement' network on small-scale fishing.

May 15, 2009

The European Union (EU) is currently working on reforming the Common
Fisheries Policy through its 'green paper'. In this context, the 'Pêche
& Développement' network organized on May 15 2009 a meeting in order to
reflect on the theme 'For a sustainable small-scale fishing, today's
stakes'. The RFA contributed to this event through a document
transmitted to organizers that describes the organization's position on
several fishing related issues: ecolabels, socioeconomics, work of the
EU bodies, individual transferable quotas, etc. The RFA has also brought
its support to the 'Pêche & Développement' network for the reflection on
the future of the French small-scale fishing. The RFA document is
available online here (in French).

Small-scale and coastal fisheries (artisanal fisheries) represent the essence of the French fleet. For several years already, it is estimated that ships of less than 12 m represent about 80% of the vessels. Year 2008 was hard for fleets as French auction markets dropped 10% in volume and 11% in value. But artisanal boats made better than others. Source: Philippe Urvois, Le Marin, 2009/04/03.
